EAST OF ENGLAND PLAN PANEL REPORT (JUNE 2006)
MAIN HEADLINES RELATING TO CAMBRIDGESHIRE
1. Introduction
1.1 The East of England Plan will guide planning and development across the
region to the year 2021. It covers economic development, housing, the
environment, transport, renewable energy, waste management, sport, culture,
and recreation.
1.2 Consultation on the draft plan was undertaken between December 2004 and
March 2005. A public examination (EiP) was held before] an independent panel
between November 2005 and March 2006. The Panel's -eportwas published
on 22 June 2006.
2. Main Headlines Relating To Cambridgeshire
2.1 The purpose of this document is to identify the key recommendations of the
Panel, focussing on the main implications for Cambridgeshire. The Panel
opted to incorporate most of the draft plan's vision for the Cambridge sub
region, which is based on the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Structure Plan.
Similarly, the decision not to include any new settlements as part of this plan is
welcomed. But, there are matters that will require clarification. For instance,
the rationale for the allocation of extra housing provision in Cambridge is
unclear and raises real concerns over deliverability.

3. Next Steps
3.1 The Government will publish its proposed changes to the draft plan later in the
year, possibly in November. There will be a period of public consultation on the
proposed changes before the final East of England Plan is adopted by the
Government in Spring 2007. At that point existing Structure Plans will cease to
provide the planning framework for Local Development Documents (unless
taken forward into policies in the new Regional Spatial Strategy).
3.2 The Regional Assembly will consider the Panel's recommendations at its next
meeting on 21 st July 2006 in Newmarket.
